Writing Misconceptions

Hello and a happy Friday to you all!

Today I want to go over something a little different. Lately I’ve been coming across more and more people with misconceptions about writing. It’s about time we set the record straight.

Writing a Book Is Easy

If writing a book was so easy then why aren’t there more books in the world? Writing a book is one of the hardest things to do because you are literally created an entire world, to include people, out of nothing. On top of that you must give those people something to do in the that world. Writing is unreliable stressful and if it were as easy as people like to think then we would all have countless books published by now.

Writers Make A Lot of Money

Uh no. The term “starving artist” applies to writers as well. Many authors write their books while also maintaining full time jobs. Of course there are exceptions to this, the ones that have their books become a sensation but for the most part writers don’t make much.

Writers Enjoy Drinks Too Much

Not every writer is an alcoholic. I for one only drink maybe four or five times a year. Does wine relax you when things are a little too stressful? Of course but that doesn’t only apply to writers. Plenty of writers don’t even drink.

Writers Must Always Be Original

No single idea is completely original, it’s how you put those different pieces together that make it unique.

All Witers Are Readers

This is quite untrue. Just because you enjoy everything that comes with writing does mean you’re going to enjoy reading as much. This is like saying “All actors/actresses also love movies”, I’m sure there’s actors or actresses out there that don’t really like watching movies or TV. Just because you are a creator of the art doesn’t mean you have to enjoy that art.

Write What You Know

This one is just ridiculous. If everyone only wrote what they knew then fantasy and s I-fi would cease to exist. It’s called an imagination for a reason.

Writers Have All the Time in the World

No, writers most certainly do not have all the time in the world. They are are trying to juggle everything that comes with life, jobs, family, chores, responsibilities, .etc. all while trying to get enough coherent words on the page to make a book. Writers make time for what they love, just as anyone else makes time for what they love.

Have you ever come across someone with opinions like these?

Perhaps we as writers make things look easier than they really are but I haven’t heard remarks like this said about other professions. Let me know your thoughts of what others think about writers.

Until next week!

✿ Happy reading and writing to all and to all a good day ✿
