Hello and welcome on this wonderful Friday!
We have officially reached the last blog post of the month. It’s hard to believe January is already at its end. It feels like we’ve only just begun this year and already the first month is behind us. I hope this month has treated you well my lovelies.
Today’s topic may seem less geared towards newer writers but I assure you, everyone has something they can gain from this post.
The pull of a new story is one we all as writers are familiar with. Start one idea with all the passion and enthusiasm our little hearts can hold and before we know it another idea comes hopping along only to be placed in a safe place for later. Then there comes the nagging voice question whether this current idea is the one to be working on, after all that other one was so shiny, or worse yet, once you’ve finished with that first idea trying to decide between all the shiny ones you’ve gathered.
The pressures of trying to decide on the right idea can often feel as though it could make or break you.
If you’re currently working on something that you aren’t sure is the right project for you at the moment then perhaps try giving one of your other ideas a try. I know it can seem daunting, trying to figure out what to do but sometimes when our minds are pulled from one project it can mean that it isn’t the one for us right now. On the other hand you also have to ask yourself whether you’re simply eyeing up other ideas in order to escape your current one because you’ve hit a snag. In either case it won’t hurt you to toy around with another idea or two and if you first idea keeps calling to you then you know that it’s the right one.
If like me you find yourself on the other side of things, having just finished one story and trying to figure out what idea to work on next then perhaps one of these tips will work for you.
There’s always the tried and tested way of simply going with whatever idea calls to you the most. This tactic never hurts and always leaves you open to switching projects at any time.
If you’re looking for something a little more concise then choose a handful of ideas from your archive of ideas. Write down as much as you possibly can about each idea. From there you can either go for whichever idea you have the most information on or the idea that sparks the most in you. If you’re lucky that idea will be one in the same.
Perhaps finish up any lose ended stories you may have laying around that still draw your attention. You never know what new things you can bring to your story now that you’ve finished a book and sometimes the ideas left half written are the ones waiting for their moment to shine. This and the option below are my solutions to get through February and I’m looking forward to it.
My last suggestion would be plotting out, or thinking up if you’re a pantser, and sequels you may have in mind for your story. It could never hurt to know where you’re trying to take the story.
Right now you’re in a lull period where there isn’t the demand of finishing a story lingering over your head so feel free to play around with ideas until finding something that feels right.
As you can see there’s a plethora of ways to make your ideas work for you. Try not to push yourself too hard and just let things happen as they will otherwise you can burn yourself out then both you and your idea will suffer.
Until next week!
✿ Happy reading and writing to all and to all a good day ✿
