Catching Up On Word Count

Hello all and welcome back on this wonderful Friday!

There are only three days left until the end of NaNoWriMo 2020. This month always seems to come and go in the press of a keyboard. By this point I’m pretty sure there are some out there whose word counts aren’t where they need them to be. The panic is most likely setting in and a heavy cloud of hopelessness and defeat is taking form. Take heed my friends, I’ve been there more times than I care to admit but because of that I now have three tips to share with you that may lead you to the victory you seek.

Set goals

Of course we already had a goal in mind before NaNoWriMo even began. Reach 50,000 words, some of you may have had separate goals in mind and those are equally important and worth noting. But being behind in your word count can really make that 50,000 goal intimidating.

One thing I’ve learned to do over the years to help catch me up on my word goal is this. Continue hitting your daily word count goal BUT set time apart from that with a separate goal to help cover those missing words.

In the past I’ve tried dividing my missing words into my current daily goal but before you know it, if you get too far behind, that goal seems just as impossible as the 50,000 one. Trust me what I say that keeping your daily goal separate from your make up goal is the best way to go.

Do writing sprints

Sprinting isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea, I know that, but desperate times call for desperate measures. There’s no harm in setting a five or ten minute timer and seeing how many words you can pump out in that time. This can really help you cover more ground than you would think, not to mention the sense of accomplishment that comes with watching your word count climb in such a brief time frame.

Skip what you don’t know

This ties into a post I made back in October about using filler spaces. There’s nothing worse than being in the writing zone and hitting a wall because you’ve come across something you weren’t prepared for. In moments like those it’s best to leave a little note such as “insert fighting scene here” and continue on with your flow.

I’m sorry this post wasn’t long, this month has kept me busy as a bee but I do hope that it can help you on your way to a NaNoWriMo victory (but we all know any words written this month is a victory). Looks like I won’t be seeing you all again until December when we jump head first into Indiecember. In the meantime keep your spirits high, your drink filled, and your imagination alive.

Until next week!

✿ Happy reading and writing to all and to all a good day ✿
