Hello and a very wonderful day to you all!!
This time next week will be the official kick off to NaNoWriMo. Before that day, which brings such mixed feelings, I thought it would be nice to share with you all some things to keep in mind during the next month.
It’s okay to take breaks
Please oh please remember to take breaks to give your body and mind a chance to unwind from all the work.
Your outline, if you use one, is not something set in stone and it is okay to deviate from the path
Think of your outline as nothing more than stepping stones you follow to reach your destination. These stepping stones are under your control and if you want to move them to try a different direction, do it. Don’t stress yourself out if something doesn’t go the exact way you planned, see where it takes you and if you don’t like it you can always go back. One of my stories broke from my outline and it actually came out the better for it so I went back and altered my outline to match the new path. Nothing is written in stone and you never know, you might like where it takes you.
Keep in touch with the Writing Community
Social anxiety and being introverted are the name of my game but one of the best moves I ever made was working my way into the writing community. I have never been in a place so helpful and supportive, you honestly can’t go wrong. Put away those fears of someone stealing your idea, a majority of writers have their own ideas to battle with and aren’t even contemplating how to take yours. The writing community really is one of the best places you can find yourself in because people there will help you up when you feel down, will give any advice they have, you can find friends, critique partners, and beta readers, it’s a wonderful place to just unwind, and so much more. Give it a chance.
Any progress you make is still a win. Don’t feel like you have to reach 50,000 words in order to feel like you’ve succeeded. Whether 10 words, 100 words, 1,000 words, 10,000 words, or the full 50,000 you are a winner.
What more is there to say? You ARE a winner no matter how much progress you make, simple as that. Progress is progress.
NaNoWriMo doesn’t have to be a scary experience. Stay positive and take things one step at a time. When this all begins I’ll be bringing my own surprise with me so stay tuned.
See you in the trenches next week everyone!
What are your NaNoWriMo survival tips?
